While many live events have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak there’s still a lot of creative things going on along the Outer Banks.
Outer Banks restaurants have always been out in front in times of need, especially when it comes to serving our front-line workers and first responders. We’ve often seen their actions over and above the call of duty in the aftermath of hurricanes when their doors and open and free meals provided to police, fire, EMS and the power company personnel who restore electricity to the island.
First, Mulligan’s Grille is sending their food truck to the Dare County mainland so residents there can take advantage of the same kind of takeout and curbside service enjoyed by residents on the other side of the sound!
Their food truck will be located at Vertigo Tattoo in Mann’s Harbor on Tuesday, April 21 and Wednesday, April 22 and Friday, April 24 from noon until 7 p.m.
Burgers (including a Beyond Burger option), hot dogs, fish tacos, Greek salad, shrimp rolls and gyros are on the menu with virtually all choices priced at $8. They have new popular items also such as meatloaf and baked potato and their famous tater nachos. Check out their menu here.
On April 23 Mulligan’s will be at the Outer Banks Hospital with their food truck feeding nurses, doctors, administrators, and local first responders free of charge. The exact times have not been set but look for them around the 11 a.m. time slot.

Chip’s Wine & Beer Market has been hosting virtual wine tastings each week. Customers can either pick up or have the wines delivered for a blind tasting event (the labels will be covered) and then join owners Phillip and Laura Gwaltney via video as they lead you through the tasting. Participants will try to guess the grape varietal and pricing of each wine. If you’ve ever been to one of Chip’s “live” blind tastings you know this is a fun way to explore wine and often the least expensive wine is the “winner” of the event!
The next virtual wine tasting event is April 25. You can pre-order your wines for pickup or delivery from their Facebook page:
El Café is another Facebook page where creativity is the buzzword. Local artists – both professional and amateur – are posting videos of their music, magic tricks and just about anything else one can imagine for the benefit of all of us practicing self-isolation. The virtual performances can be seen by visiting the Facebook page and asking to join. Look for more from this page and OBX.Live in the near future.

Looking for some new “quarantine” drinks? Pop over to Outer Banks Distilling’s Facebook page for some video recipes for rum drinks. In addition to watching the videos, you can keep up with the community service this company is performing: they’ve converted their distillery to a hand-sanitizer manufacturer, and are distributing free product to local first responders and others in need of this important tool in the fight against COVID-19. https://www.facebook.com/outerbanksdistilling/
